However, seven sportsbooks started an initiative titled “California Solutions to Homelessness and Mental Health Support Act”, which includes provisions to send a percentage of revenue to mental health services and fight against homelessness.

The November 2022 Ballot to Legalize Sports Betting in California

Bill 26 which would have seen legalized sports betting at tribal casinos and bill 27 which would have seen online sports betting legalized both failed to pass by a huge margin with 83% of voters rejecting bill 27. The reasons for this failure seem to be in most part down to an ineffective advertising campaign and staunch opposition by most local Native American tribes.

The big defeat for legalizing sports betting in California is a setback for legal sports betting but it is by no means the end. It is likely that another bill will be put forward in the future or gambling companies may try to work with the state legislature to pass a law on a new form of gambling. However, it’s not going to be until late 2023 at the earliest that sports betting will have another chance at becoming legal in CA.
