Top 10 Alberta Sports Betting Sites in 2023 – Comparing The Best Alberta Online Sportsbooks

Alberta sports betting has already moved online with the launch of PlayAlberta.ca, the province’s official online sportsbook. Prior to the passing of Bill-C-218, legal sports betting in Alberta was run through Sport Select, a Western Canada Lottery Corporation product that offered parlay betting and pool-buying schemes at local retailers. For the first time, residents can place single-game bets online through PlayAlberta.com and a handful of other licensed oddsmakers. With the Canadian market expected to grow rapidly in the near future, we’ll break down some of the best online sportsbooks in Alberta that are already offering single-game betting.

Betting for Real Money on Sports

Licensed sportsbooks like PlayAlberta.ca make it easy to bet on sports online. With the ability to make single-event bets, it has never been easier for sports fans in Canada to profit off of their sports knowledge. For the first time, residents in Alberta will be able to cash in on some of the best sports betting odds and markets, including props and futures betting options.

Below, we’ll analyze some common sports betting options that will be available in Alberta.

Single Game Betting In Alberta

While most Canadians are still new to online gambling, residents in Alberta can already place legal sports bets online via PlayAlberta.ca. Thanks to the passing of Bill C-218, they can make predictions on game lines, game props, player props, and futures without having to add another selection to their bet slip.

We’ll break down some of the most common single-event betting options at online sportsbooks in Alberta below.

Money Line Betting In Alberta

Money line betting is the simplest way to place a bet on the game. A money line wager is a bet on the final outcome of a match. When betting on a money line selection, sports fans do not have to win by a certain margin of victory for their bet to be settled as a winner. Instead, they can simply predict the winner of a game at a pre-determined price.

An example of a money line bet

Point Spread Betting In Alberta

Point spread betting requires teams to win the contest by a certain margin of victory. Several sports, including football and basketball, rely on point spreads to even out the odds and make it profitable to bet on both sides of a match.

When betting teams to cover the point spread, the oddsmakers will specify the favourite with a minus sign (-) and the underdog with a plus sign (+), followed by the number of points that a team must win or lose by for the bet to be settled as a winner.

Totals Betting In Alberta

Sports fans that don’t want to predict the final outcome of a match can also bet on whether a game will be a high or low-scoring affair by wagering on the total. When making totals bets, fans can simply predict whether the score of a game will go over or under a projected number of points determined by the oddsmakers. If a bettor chooses the over, their wager will be settled as a winner if the two teams combine for more than the projected point total. On the other hand, if they picked the under, their bet will only be stelled as a winner if the two sides combine to score fewer than the projected total number of points.

An example of a totals bet

Parlay Betting In Alberta

A parlay bet puts multiple picks together into a single bet slip to generate a bigger payout. When placing a parlay bet, two or more selections are combined into one bet, increasing the overall risk and reward of a single wager. For the bet to be settled as a winner, all of the picks made on the bet slip must be correct. Otherwise, the entire bet will be settled as a loss.

Parlay betting has been offered in Alberta via Sports Select since the early 1990s but betting online comes with a few added benefits. The best betting sites in Alberta deliver added value to parlay bettors by offering special promotions, including parlay bonuses, free bets, odds boosts, and more. These types of promotions allow sports fans to increase their payouts and chances of winning without taking on any additional risk.

An example of a Parlay Bet

Props Betting In Alberta

In addition to game lines, Canadian bettors can also make single-event bets on the props market in nearly every sport. Props bets give sports fans the ability to profit from their knowledge of individual players and get more specific with their wagers. A props bet is a wager that is not directly tied to the final outcome of a game but involves an individual event in the match.

The best sportsbooks in Alberta feature an assortment of props betting options for matches in every sport, including game props, team props, player props, and more. Sports fans can bet on anything from the first-period winner to which player will score the first touchdown in a football game.

An example of a prop bet on the NHL

Futures Betting In Alberta

The Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act also opened up the futures market to Canadian bettors, where they can make speculative wagers on anything from the Grey Cup winner to the NBA MVP Award. A futures bet is a long-term wager on an event that takes place sometime in the future. The best sports betting sites in Alberta offer futures bets for the outright winner and division winners in each sport, along with odds for season-long player props and season specials.

Is Sports Betting Legal in Alberta?

Sports betting has been legal in Alberta since the early 1990s through Sports Select, a sports betting lottery product from the Western Canada Lottery Corporation. However, until recently sports fans could only legally make parlay bets and play in pool-buying schemes.

The recently passed Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act gives Canadians access to single-event betting on game lines, props, and futures bets with licensed online sportsbooks. For the first time, Canadians can bet on sports and make predictions without having to add a second selection to their bet slip.

As of now, PlayAberta.ca is the only officially licensed sportsbook in Alberta but some of the world’s best betting sites are expected to join the Alberta sports betting market in the near future.

Until then, residents can still cash in on odds and promotions from other sports betting sites. While Bill C-218 passed single-event sports betting in Canada, placing wagers with offshore betting sites remains a legal grey area for bettors. It remains illegal to operate an online sportsbook in Canada without a license but there is no language in Canada’s Criminal Code forbidding Canadians from placing their wagers with offshore websites.

That means that residents in Alberta can still register for an account, place wagers, and cash out their winnings from offshore sportsbooks without breaking the law.

According to the ALGC, research conducted in 2020 indicated that residents in Alberta spend an estimated $53 million annually on offshore sports betting sites. They also invest an estimated $49 million annually on daily fantasy sports (DFS) websites, including DraftKings and FanDuel.

Betting Laws in Alberta

The history of legal betting in Alberta is … short. There has been little in the way of betting legislation throughout the province’s history – until 2021, that it.

The first sports betting option came to Alberta in 1990, with the arrival of Sport Select. This was in tandem with the introduction of Sport Select to several Canadian provinces.

It wasn’t though until 2021 that betting laws in Alberta came into being with the passing of C-218 (known as the ‘Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act’). This permitted non-parlay betting at regulated sites for the first time. Little over two months later, the first regulated online sportsbook in Alberta – PlayAlberta.ca – came online.

Who Can Bet On Sports In Alberta?

Gambling and sports betting in Canada fall under provincial law, so each province is able to determine its own legal gambling age. According to the ALGC, over 80 percent of adults in Alberta engage in at least one gambling activity per year.

In Alberta, sports fans can start placing bets earlier than in some of the neighbouring provinces. While Canadians have to be at least 19 to gamble in many provinces and territories, the legal age for betting on sports and gambling in Alberta is only 18 years old.

The same rules apply to online gambling as well. Accessible via any smartphone, tablet, or computer, Play Alberta is available to all residents over the age of 18.

Like at a traditional casino, there are certain other conditions that sports fans must satisfy when betting online in Alberta. Before registering, it is imperative for users to review the terms and conditions that come with signing up for an account.

Before placing a bet, members must provide accurate account information and use a valid email address during the registration process. New users will have to show proof that they are a Canadian resident and have a valid Canadian address, usually by providing identification or official documentation. Finally, they will also need to choose an accepted payment method to complete transactions and fund their account.

Sports bettors may also be restricted from accessing their favourite sportsbook depending on their location. Some Alberta betting sites may be subject to geofencing, which can block users from accessing their account when crossing the border into other provinces and foreign countries.

Who Can Bet On Sports Online In Alberta

✅ Must be 18 years old or older
✅ Must have a valid e-mail address
✅ Must provide accurate account information
✅ Must be a resident of Canada
✅ Must have a valid Canadian address
✅ Must have an accepted payment method for deposit and withdrawal

Tax on Betting in Alberta

There is no tax on betting in Alberta, generally, unless you consider gambling to be your sole or main source of income. In the latter regard, you may seen to be a professional gambler, in which your income is taxed just like any other form of income.

If you keep your winnings in a bank account and earn interest, then that interest will be taxed, and you will need to declare it on your T5 form.

Offshore Betting in Alberta

The legality of offshore betting sites in Alberta depends on various factors, including the specific laws and regulations of the jurisdiction in which the betting site operates, as well as the laws and regulations of Alberta. In general, Canadian law prohibits offshore online gambling operators from providing services to Canadians, but enforcement of these laws can be challenging as the companies offering offshore betting are not based in Canada, and are therefore unencumbered by Alberta laws surrounding sports betting.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Alberta Sports Betting Online

For sports fans looking to get in on the action, betting with an online sportsbook has several major advantages compared to traditional sports betting. Accessible via any computer, smartphone, or mobile device, fans can cash in pre-game odds or live betting markets with the click of a button. While most people in Alberta have already placed a bet with Sport Select, residents can now make bets with licensed online sportsbooks like PlayAlberta.ca.

Below, we’ll go over some of the advantages and disadvantages of placing your bets online with betting sites in Alberta.

Comparing The Advantages and Disadvantages Of Sports Betting Online In Alberta

Pros

Cons

✅ Better odds and more options in the props and futures markets ❌ Bonuses can have high rollover requirements
✅ Bigger bonuses and better promotional offers ❌ Difficult to be a profitable sports bettor
✅ More convenient to deposit, make bets, and collect your cash
✅ In-play betting and live streaming events
✅ More overall fun and entertainment value

What Are The Best Sports To Bet On In Alberta?

The legalization of single-event sports betting is expected to drive growth in an already booming gaming industry in Alberta. According to the ALGC, more than $773 million in net gaming income was generated in 2020-2021 for the General Revenue Fund, which supports the everyday programs and services that residents rely on. That number is expected to rise dramatically with Play Alberta coming online earlier this year.

Play Alberta will give sports bettors access to money line, point spread, and totals betting options for NHL, NFL, CFL, MLB, NBA, European soccer, and much more. Below, we’ll go over some of the best sports to bet on in Alberta.

Baseball

Baseball gets almost all of the attention during the summer when other sports are in the midst of their offseasons. It has one of the longest regular-season schedules of any professional sport, making it one of the most profitable sports to bet on. While most baseball fans will opt to bet on Major League Baseball, Canadians can also take advantage of odds from other baseball leagues. In addition to MLB betting, they can also cash in on odds for minor league baseball, college baseball, and international baseball games.

Baseball betting

Basketball

The Toronto Raptors are Canada’s lone NBA team but basketball remains one of the fastest-growing sports on the West Coast. Alberta basketball fans can get in on the action with NBA betting or wager on NCAA Basketball, March Madness, or international basketball leagues, like EuroLeague Basketball. Now that single-event betting is legal, basketball bettors can also wager on game props, player props, and futures bets without adding another selection to their bet slip.

Betting on Basketball

Football

Canada has its own football league, the Canadian Football League (CFL), and Alberta is home to two teams: the Edmonton Elks and the Calgary Stampeders. Edmonton has won 14 Grey Cups while the Stampeders have won eight Grey Cup Championship Games. While the CFL remains popular, nearly as many sports fans follow the National Football League (NFL) in Canada. That should make NFL betting even more interesting for the upcoming season, as football fans can make single-game bets on CFL games, like the Grey Cup, or bet on contests in the NFL or NCAA college football. You can find our list ranking the best NFL betting sites Canada has to offer here.

Betting on football

Hockey

Canada’s national sport, hockey is very popular on the West Coast of Canada. Alberta is home to two National Hockey League teams, the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames. The province has also produced some incredible hockey talent, including Mark Messier, Jarome Iginla, and current Boston Bruins forward Taylor Hall. Hockey is also one of the most profitable sports to bet on. In addition to NHL betting, hockey fans in Alberta can cash in on odds for AHL games and international hockey leagues, like the KHL.

Betting on Hockey

Soccer

One of the world’s most popular sports, soccer is also popular along Canada’s West Coast. There are three Major League Soccer teams in Canada while Alberta is home to FC Edmonton, a Canadian professional soccer club. In addition to MLS betting, fans can bet on some of the world’s best football leagues, including Premier League, La Liga, Series A, and Bundesliga.

Betting on Alberta Sports Teams

Alberta is home to several pro sports teams, and people from Alberta will often place bets on them in the hope that they will win. Despite your loyalties to your native state, it’s best to always bet with your head as opposed to your heart. Here though, are the sports teams based in Alberta that you can bet on:

National Hockey League

Calgary Flames

Founded in 1972, the Flames franchise moved from Atlanta in the US in 1980 and play at the Scotiabank Saddledrome. Despite half a century now of existence, the Flames have only won the Stanley Cup once, in the 1988-89 season. They were conference champions in 1985-86, 1988-89 and 2003-04.

Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers were originally named the Alberta Oilers but changed to the Edmonton prefix after one season (1972-73) in the World Hocky Association. They moved to the NHL when the WHA was absorbed into it. The team has played at Rogers Place since 2016.

Thanks to the legendary Wayne Gretzky, the Oilers dominated the NHL from 1983 until 1990, winning five Stanley Cups. They haven’t won the Stanley Cup since the 1989-90 season though, although they were Conference champions in 2005-06.

Canadian Football League

Edmonton Elks

Playing at the Commonwealth Stadium, the Edmonton Elks (previously the Edmonton Eskimos) have been around since 1949. Their first Grey Cup win came in 1954, which was the start of their first three-peat. The best years for the Elks though came between 1978 and 1982 when they won the Grey Cup for five successive seasons.

In 2020 they changed their name from the Edmonton Eskimos, becoming the Edmonton Football Team for one season. In 2021 they were renamed to the Edmonton Elks.

Calgary Stampeders

The Stampeders became Calgary’s main football team in 1945 playing at the Mewata Park Stadium until 1960, when they moved to the McMahon Stadium.

The side won their first Grey Cup in 1948 but wins have been sporadic ever since. In total, the Stampeders have won the Grey Cup eight times, with the last success coming in 2018.

Canadian Premier League (Soccer)

After three poor years it was announced that FC Edmonton would not play any competitive fixtures in 2023.

Cavalry FC

The Calvary Football Club came into being in 2018, finding a home at ATCO Field Foothills County. The won the CPL in their first season but lost the playoff final to Forge FC of Ontario, and failed to qualify for the playoffs in their second.

Payment Methods at Alberta Sports Betting Sites

There are five main ways that sports bettors in Alberta get money into their sports betting accounts, and in this section we will take a look at the most common ones.

Credit and Debit Cards

Most sports betting sites in Alberta will accept Visa and MasterCard deposits from credit and debit cards. Other, less commonly accepted cards include Discover, Diner’s Club and American Express.

eWallets

Interac is the major eWallet in Canada, both other eWallets may be accpted by Alberta sportsbooks. These include Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Skrill, Neteller, PayPal and Much Better.

eVouchers

Less common at Albeta sportsbooks than eWallets, you can buy eVouchers online or at real-world retailers in Alberta and then use them to make deposits. Neosurf is the number one eVoucher scheme for Canadians, followed by PaysafeCard.

Bank transfers

You may be able to transfer money directly from your bank to an online sports book, but that’s unlikely. Some services, such as Trustly, faciliate this option for you.

Cryptocurrencies

Many offshore sports betting sites available to people in Alberta are happy to accept cryptocurrency payments. Bitcoin, Ethereum and Tether are all popular cryptocurrencies readily accepted by many sports betting sites.

Live Betting with Alberta Sportsbooks

Live betting, or in-play betting as it is also known, is where you are able to place wagers on events that have already started. This is different to pre-event betting, but the principle remains the same.

Say the Elks are playing the Stampeders and are two points adrift in the third quarter. They are driving for a touchdown but you have a feeling that they will settle for a field goal if they are struggling to reach the end zone. You can therefore place a bet on the next score in the match being a field goal, or you can narrow it down to a Elks field goal, or broaden it to being the next scoring play being a field goal.

Many such possibilities from sports can be bet on live at Alberta sportsbooks.

Reading the Odds

The two main representation of odds in Alberta are American and decimal. Here we take a look at how to understand each odds format.

American odds

American odds will be in the format ‘-110’ or ‘+140’. If the number is negative, then this is the amount of money you need to place on a bet to win $100. If the number is positive, then that is the amount of money you would win if you placed $100 on it. Remember the return of your stake too, so a $10 bet at +110 would win $11 but you’d get back $21 in total.

Decimal odds

Decimal odds just represent your overall return from a wager. To work out your return (not winnings) just multiple the odds by your stake. Therefore odds of 1.50 for a $10 bet would return $15, meaning that you won $5.

Are There Any Betting Limitations In Alberta?

Single-event betting is now legal in Canada but there are still some restrictions to online betting in Alberta. While Canadians can place single-game bets on sporting events, fights, and e-sports, single-event bets on horse racing and political events are technically still off-limits.

When it comes to betting at the racetrack, pari-mutuel betting remains the only legal form of gambling on horse racing in Canada. With pari-mutuel betting, gamblers are not wagering against the house. Instead, they are betting against other people that have wagered on the same race.

Political events are also subject to similar limitations. It is not against the law to offer odds for Canadian political events but it might represent a conflict of interest for provincial gaming and lottery commissions. Currently, only Crown corporations, like Play Alberta, can legally offer odds for betting on political events, such as the results of the 2021 Canadian Federal Election.

Some sportsbooks are taking bets though. Canadians that want to wager on the 2021 Federal Election in Canada will have to take their action online. Sports Interaction is one of the few sports betting sites in Alberta that allows residents to bet on the election results. As of this writing, $100 bettors can earn $457 in profits or $557 in total return if prime minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party earn a majority government.
