Is Online Poker Legal in New Hampshire?

New Hampshire is a unique state when it comes to gambling laws. Gambling is legal in the Granite State, but those laws are rather strict. For example, casino gaming is legal but only at authorized charity casinos that must give a percentage of profits to charitable organizations. Slot games are banned, and these casinos don’t offer much table gaming.

All gambling laws including online poker legislation for New Hampshire can be found within the New Hampshire Revised Statutes, section 647.2 and 248.1. Those statues do not explicitly ban online poker in New Hampshire, but they don’t exactly say you can play poker online in New Hampshire either. It’s a bit of legal grey area where the general rules imply that playing online is not allowed.

So, is online poker legal in New Hampshire? Technically, no, but online offshore gambling sites will accept players from New Hampshire. Playing at these offshore casinos is not allowed and doing so is a misdemeanor that carries a fine of up to $1,200 – however, no resident has been chased up for playing at a New Hampshire online poker site.

Video Poker

Video poker is where online poker began. Before table gaming and Live Casino were ever a thing, we had video poker. Sometimes referred to as poker trainers, Video Poker is a form of computerized draw poker. Typically, you’ll see video poker games based on 3-card or 5-card draw poker, but the themes and variants are wide-ranging.

The most popular video poker games online are typically Jacks or Better… or Deuces Wild but there are many more – BetOnline offers more than 12 video poker titles. Playing video poker games online is still not allowed in New Hampshire, so residents of the Granite State will need to resort to offshore gambling sites.

Casual Poker

One of the easiest ways to play poker in New Hampshire but not always a legal option. It may seem innocent enough to get your friends together, sit at a table, and gamble on a few hands of your favorite type of poker. However, poker can only be played for real money at authorized charity casinos. This does mean you could play poker for chips and not exchange any actual money.

New Hampshire Poker Laws

New Hampshire gambling legislation allows for playing poker but only at authorized charity casinos. Unfortunately, there are only a handful of these operations in the state, and they don’t all immediately offer poker. Some do, but others only offer table poker games at special “Casino Nights” where many table games are offered.

Poker was legalized in 1977 but the maximum bet limit was a mere $1. In 1998 the limit was raised to $2, and it took another 10 years to raise the limit to $4. However, in 2015 legislators removed any maximum bet limits. The legal age for all forms of casino gaming, including poker, is 18 in New Hampshire.

Offshore Poker Sites in New Hampshire

While online casino games and poker games are not currently legal in the state (although this may change in the near future). Many people in New Hampshire play poker for real money at offshore websites. As the state has never attempted to prosecute any player or offshore gambling site there is no relevant case law and this is why BetOnline and other offshore sites are happy to accept players from the “Granite State”.

History of Gambling in New Hampshire

New Hampshire passed its first laws against gambling in 1679. Gambling remained illegal and was considered a social ill for a long time. It wasn’t until the great depression that the state started to relax its laws on gambling when in 1933 pari-mutuel betting on horses was allowed.

In the late 1940s, the first charity gambling act was passed. This legalized bingo, raffles, and lucky 7 but included that 35% of any revenue had to go to charity. The law still stands today but was expanded in 2014, strengthening its oversight.

In 2019, one year after the PASPA ruling, New Hampshire legalized sports betting. It is legal in the state to bet on the outcome of sports both online and in person. In 2023 the New Hampshire state senate approved an online casino bill, which includes poker.

New Hampshire Online Poker Laws

There is no explicit online poker legislation in New Hampshire. Therefore, the question of whether online poker is legal in New Hampshire is commonly queried. Technically, playing online poker in New Hampshire is not allowed but currently, no player has been fined for doing so. New Hampshire residents can play poker at offshore casinos like BetOnline to enjoy tournaments and cash games.

New Hampshire Poker – Live and in Person

To play poker in New Hampshire in person, you’ll need to head to a charity casino. Thankfully, several offers poker tables, and some are actually poker rooms. To avoid heading to a charity casino that doesn’t offer a quality poker game, we’ve hand-selected 3 of the best poker rooms in New Hampshire.

Benefits of Playing Poker Online vs Land-based Casino

Even in a small state like New Hampshire, traveling to your nearest poker room can be a long journey. In the winter months setting off on the road is even less appealing. This is why so many people prefer playing online, where they can chill out on their cozy couch or bed while taking part in a poker game.

There are also plenty of other benefits. In a casino or poker room there are a very limited number of tables and seats so even if you make the trip you may have to wait a while before being able to play. If you enjoy tournaments then your options for in-person gambling are very limited as there may be one tournament a day if you’re lucky. On the other hand, New Hampshire poker websites host hundreds of daily tournaments.

Additionally, the online poker market is a very crowded space which is good news for players as sites offer huge poker bonuses to entice you customers as well as rewarding their loyal patrons. As there are not many in-person casinos or poker rooms in New Hampshire and the fact they are not in close proximity means that you don’t find many bonuses for poker players.

Payment Methods for Playing Online Poker in New Hampshire

It’s essential that whatever New Hampshire online poker website you choose offers a diverse range of payment options. In this section we provide you an overview of the different types of payment methods available online and what terms you will likely find with each of them.

Deposits

Before you can start playing poker you will need to fund your account. Read on as we cover the different deposit options available at most offshore poker sites in New Hampshire offers.

Credit & Debit Cards

All the poker sites featured in this article accept payments via major credit and debit cards such as Visa and Mastercard and some also accept AMEX and Discover cards. This method is convenient as payments are processed quickly and most people have access to a bank card. However, due to certain regulations, there are charges for using your card at offshore gambling websites, and in most cases, the site will pass the charges on to the players. The charges are usually a percentage ranging from 3-20% depending on the site.

Wire Transfer

You can directly wire money to your poker site either by going into your bank or more conveniently using your mobile banking app. There are usually fees involved to use this method. More often than not it’s a set fee but is often quite high, often being $50-150. The deposit limits are also some of the most restrictive with high minimum limits and low maximum limits.

Bitcoin

Bitcoin has become a popular way to deposit at online poker sites in New Hampshire in recent years. More and more people are favoring this option because transactions are secure and speedy, it allows players to remain anonymous, there are usually no fees involved and maximum limits are higher and minimum limits are lower. Additionally, the best Bitcoin online poker sites also offer special Bitcoin bonuses for players that utilize this cryptocurrency to fund their accounts.

Cryptocurrency

Nowadays there are thousands of different cryptocurrencies and online poker websites generally accept at least 4 different coins. As well as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Dogecoin, and Ripple are the most commonly accepted coins. All cryptocurrencies offer the same benefits as Bitcoin.

eWallets

There are a ton of different eWallets available online and they are a popular way to pay for things online including gambling. Ewallet transactions are fast, secure, and have minimal to no fees. The eWallets that can be used vary by site but some of the most commonly accepted wallets are, Skrill, Neteller, Google Pay, and Apple Wallet. Unfortunately due to restrictions offshore sites are not able to accept payments via PayPal.

Withdrawals

Hopefully, you are going to be withdrawing more money than you deposit so having plenty of options to do so is essential. At most sites, the same methods for depositing money are available for withdrawing. However, there are a few differences, for example at almost all offshore sites you can not withdraw money via credit and debit cards from any offshore sites.

Wire Transfer

Wire transfers are a convenient method to cash out your winnings but also a timely one. It generally takes around one to three weeks before you will see the money in your account. In addition, there are usually relatively high fees for using this method.

Check

Having your money sent to you in the form of a check is also another common traditional method for withdrawals. However, this method takes even longer than wire transfers, plus you’ll then have to wait for your bank to clear the check. There are almost always fees for this option..

Bitcoin & other Cryptocurrency

Cryptocurrency is the most efficient method for withdrawals in most instances as transactions are incredibly fast, most sites process payments within 48 hours, and in most cases it’s just a few hours or minutes. Furthermore, most sites don’t charge any fee for this and the min/max withdrawal limits offer a lot of flexibility compared to other methods.

eWallets

Like cryptocurrency eWallet withdrawals are speedy and free of charge. The minimum cash-out limits are also usually the same as crypto but the maximum limit is usually much lower.

Making New Hampshire Poker Online Deposits

The best online New Hampshire poker sites offer players more than one way to deposit funds into their poker accounts. Operators must offer a variety of methods to ensure they can reach the widest range of players. Payouts need to be fast, and most payment methods result in instant deposits.

Tips for Online Poker Real Money New Hampshire

When you’re starting out as a new poker player at the best New Hampshire online poker sites, you’ll want to get off to a flyer. To help those novice poker players, we’ve put together a few top tips for playing online poker for real money in New Hampshire.

  • Don’t play every hand – You don’t want to burn through your bankroll trying to win every single hand. The most seasoned pros know when to fold. This means learning to accept that your dealt hand simply isn’t very good, and you’ll be better off giving that round a miss.
  • Hand Rankings and Odds – Understanding the basic rules of your chosen poker variant is important but most important is learning the hand rankings. If you can get a bead on the odds then more power to you. At least understanding the rankings will help you learn to build strong hands and stand the best chance of beating your competition.
  • Follow the Best – Watch your opponents that are performing well. They could be quality players and there will be a lot you can learn from them. See how they fold and watch to see how they choose to bet. The best way to beat the competition is to learn their strengths and weaknesses.

Famous New Hampshire Poker Players

Being one of the lowest-populated states in the US, it’s no surprise that there aren’t many famous poker players from New Hampshire. There are, however, a few names that serious poker fans may have heard before. The most successful player to hail from NH is probably Dan Chalifour. He has never won a WSOP bracelet but has had 3 cash finishes and claimed one WSOP ring for winning a circuit tournament. His total poker earnings sit just below $900,000 at the time of writing

Michael Drummond is another successful poker player from “the Granite State”. While he does sit behind Chalifour on the NH poker earnings list, he has one WSOP bracelet to his name. He picked this up at the 45th World Series of Poker championship, for winning the $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 6-Handed tournament.

Poker Games to Play in New Hampshire

A major advantage of online poker compared to real-world poker rooms is that they can offer hundreds of tables offering all different types of poker games. In this section, we run through some of the options available to you at New Hampshire poker sites.

Poker Variants

While the most popular poker games are Texas Hold’em and Omaha there are a plethora of other different variations of poker out there. Almost all of the different games can be split into one of four categories which are:

Community Cards Poker: In community card games players’ hands are made up of cards dealt to them (known as hole cards) and shared face-up cards on the table. These types of poker games are widely available online and the most popular community card poker games are

  • Texas Hold’em
  • Omaha
  • Omaha Hi-Lo.Types of poker

Draw Poker: Draw poker games involve no shared cards and instead, players are dealt complete hands. To improve upon the original cards dealt to them, players can discard a certain number of their cards and replace them with new cards from the deck.

  • Five-card draw
  • Seven-card draw
  • Badugi

Stud Poker:  In this poker category players are dealt a number of cards (which varies on the specific game) either face up, face down or a combination of both

Popular stud poker variants include:

  • 5-card stud
  • 7-card stud
  • Razz
  • Eight or better
  • Caribbean Stud

Mixed Poker Games:  The name of these poker games is quite self-explanatory. Mixed poker games involve a mix of several different poker variants. The component games are played either for a set number of hands or a set time period. Once the time is up or the required number of hands have been played then the players will move on to the next variant.

Some of the most mixed types of stud poker found online are:

  • Horse (Hold’em, Omaha, Razz, Stud, and Eight or better)
  • 8 game mix (Hold’em, No Limit Hold’em, Omaha, Pot Limit Omaha Razz, Stud, Eight,2-7 Triple Draw)

Betting Limits in Poker

When playing any poker game both online or in person there will be one of three betting limits. The betting limits can significantly impact the strategy poker players use in a game. You can check out the different betting limits below:

Pot Limit: In pot limit games the maximum amount that can be bet is the total amount of the chips in the pot. Fewer people fold early on in these games as it’s inexpensive to call initially but it can get expensive later in the hand once the pot has built up.

Fixed Limit: In fixed-limit poker, a pot can only be raised a maximum of four times and the bet or raise has to be equal to the size of the blinds. As the limits are set, hands someone you might normally fold in no-limit or pot-limit games may stay in as it’s relatively cheap to stay in.

No Limit: This is the most popular betting limit in poker and the majority og games online will be No-limit. As the name suggests there are no limits on betting and players can bet however much they want in any round of betting. This allows for a lot of creativity in betting style and players can try to bluff or force people out of a hand early.

Types of Poker Tables

Another option you have when playing poker is the type of table you take a seat at. There are cash games, scheduled tournaments, and very popular sit’n’go tournaments.

Cash tables: Cash games take place on one table and can be played with 2-10 players. You can come and go as you please at a cash table and you will almost always find a seat at an online table. It’s important to remember your chips in a cash game have a real monetary value so if you put a $50 chip into the pot that is $50 of your money.

Scheduled tournaments: These are tournaments that begin at a scheduled time. Most scheduled tournaments online have quite a lot of participants often in the hundreds or even thousands. However, they can technically take place with as few as 2 players. There is no set number of players for a tournament but rather the tournament starts at a pre-arranged time with however many people sign-up (although there is often a maximum number of players permitted to enter).

The chips you have in a tournament do not have a real monetary value and players keep playing until all their chips are gone. The number of placements paid out often depends on how many players sign up. The more players the more places get paid out and if you make it to the final table of a large tournament you are almost guaranteed to win more than your entry cost.

Sit’n’go tournaments: Sit’n’go tournaments work in much the same way as a scheduled tournament with one big difference. These tournaments have a set number of players and the tournament begins as soon as that number of people have registered. Sit’n’go tourneys can take place on one or multiple tables and most online sit’n’go tourneys involve between 2-360 players, although they can be bigger.

Step. 3 – Account Verification (KYC)

The next step is an important one and is required by every player at a licensed New Hampshire online poker site. Account verification is known as the Know Your Customer (KYC) and it’s just a way for operators to ensure no financial crimes are being committed using their platform.

Nothing too difficult here either – simply upload good-quality copies of a government ID and proof of address. Files can be in JPG or PDF, and it only takes a few seconds to send off the KYC. At BetOnline, you should be verified within 48 hours.

Step. 4 – Time to play Poker!

Now that you are fully verified and fully funded, you can enjoy everything BetOnline has to offer without restriction. To enjoy online poker, simply head to the dedicated poker section at BetOnline to join cash games and tournaments. Peruse the casino lobby to find a large number of video poker and tables games too!
